Holy Family N.S. Rathmore - Astro Turf opening Sunday June 23rd 2013 A very pleasant event took place in Holy Family N.S. Rathmore on Sunday last to celebrate the opening of the Astro Turf playing facility in the school. A large crowd attended including staff, parents, pupils and past pupils. Holy Family N.S. band opened the proceedings with Amhrán na bhFiann and Fr. Pat O’Donnell P.P. performed a very nice opening blessing in which he “called on the Almighty God to grant to this facility the grace of God’s presence, that God may be known to be part of this place as one who watches over us with love”followed by a Gospel reading prayer of the faithful and a lovely blessing. Then there was more music from our school band.
Susan Cahill, a Holy Family N.S. pupil, playing the bag pipes led Declan O’Keeffe to the gate to perform the opening. Declan then said a few words in which he reminisced about his times in the old Boys School in Rathmore. He spoke fondly of his memories of playing football in the school yard under the guidance of the former Principal Mr. Paddy Mullooly. He was very honoured to be asked to perform the opening ceremony.
The Principal Diarmuid McCarthy then spoke and gave a history of how this facility came to be. He expressed gratitude on behalf of the whole school community to Rathmore G.A.A. Club for their generous financial assistance without which the project would not have come to fruition. He also thanked the B.O.M. and the Parents Committee for all their hard work and commitment to bring it about.Rathmore G.A.A. Club chairman Eoin Casey said that the club were delighted to be associated with this project and spoke of the wonderful relationship that existed between the school and the club. The Chairperson of the Board of Management thanked all those involved. The school was honoured on the day by the presence of Aidan O’Mahony. Then followed 2 exhibition games, one boys and one girls which was enjoyed by all and refereed by Aidan O’Mahony.
The group then adjourned to the G.P. room where light refreshments prepared by the Parents Committee were enjoyed by all.
